Sifan Hassan was born on 1 January 1993 in Adama, Ethiopia, and arrived in the Netherlands as a teenager seeking asylum, eventually becoming a Dutch citizen in 2013. She built her career across multiple disciplines — 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m — before turning to the marathon, accumulating a medal collection that spans nearly every distance in the sport. At the 2019 World Championships she won the 1,500m and 10,000m double. At the Tokyo Olympics she won the 5,000m and 10,000m. In Paris 2024, having already won bronze in both track events within 37 hours of each other, she outkicked Tigst Assefa in the final straight to win marathon gold and complete one of the most extraordinary Olympic hauls in athletics history.
Her marathon career is equally remarkable for its quality and its chaos. She debuted in London 2023, winning despite stopping multiple times to stretch a hip muscle. She then ran 2:13:44 in Chicago — the third-fastest women's marathon in history. She added the Paris Olympic title, and in 2025 won the Sydney Marathon in a course record. Four wins from six career starts, with a personal best that puts her among the all-time greats on the road.
