Katie Ledecky

Katie Ledecky was born on 17 March 1997 in Washington D.C. and fell in love with swimming at six, partly inspired by her mother who had swum at college level. She made her Olympic debut in London at 15 — the youngest American at the Games — and won the 800m freestyle by four seconds, a margin that announced something genuinely unusual had arrived. She went on to study at Stanford, win eight NCAA titles, and never really stopped rewriting the record books.

Across four Games from London to Paris, she has accumulated 14 Olympic medals, 9 of them gold — making her the most decorated female Olympian in American history, tied with Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina for most gold medals by any female Olympian across all sports. In the 800m and 1500m freestyle she has never lost at an Olympics or World Championships. In May 2025 she broke her own 800m world record — a mark she originally set in Rio 2016 — clocking 8:04.12 at age 28. Her 23 World Championship gold medals are the most by any swimmer, male or female, in history.
