Caeleb Dressel was born on 16 August 1996 in Green Cove Springs, Florida, into a family of swimmers. He started in the water at four, was matching high school times by nine, and went on to become the most dominant sprint swimmer of his generation. After a decorated collegiate career at the University of Florida, he exploded onto the international stage at the 2017 World Championships, winning seven gold medals in a single meet — tying Michael Phelps' all-time record. He went even further in Tokyo 2020, sweeping five individual and relay golds, setting world records in the 100m butterfly and the 4×100m medley relay, and becoming only the fifth swimmer in history to win five golds at a single Games.
His career has not been without its shadows. He withdrew mid-meet from the 2022 World Championships citing mental health, a moment of rare public honesty that drew widespread respect. He came back, qualified for Paris 2024, and added two more relay golds — bringing his Olympic total to nine. Now 28 and still competing, he holds the long-course world record in the 100m butterfly (49.45) and remains the fastest man in history over 50m in short course.
